Howlite gemstone is a naturally white stone with dark veins a glimmering lustre that often makes it similar in appearance to marble. Although it can also occur in transparent crystal form, this is extremely rare. Due to its porous nature, howlite can be easily dyed, making it a good substitute for the more fragile and much rarer turquoise.
This gemstone was discovered in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1868 by the Canadian chemist, geologist and mineralogist Henry How, who also gave it its name. He was made aware of this previously unknown mineral by miners who found it hindered their ability to get to the much softer gypsum they desired. Although discovered in Canada and appearing in countries such as Germany, Mexico and Russia, the majority of howlite is now mined in California in the United States.
Ranked as a 3.5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, it is relatively soft and so can be fashioned into spheres, egg shapes, ovals, pear shapes or more sophisticated shapes, such as skulls. It can also be tumbled and drilled to make beautiful beads.
