Onyx is formed of stripe of chalcedony in substitute colors. It is cryptocrystalline, consist of of elegant intergrowths of the silica minerals chalcedony and morganite. Its bands are counterpart to one another, as opposed to the more formless stripe that often occurs in agates. The name has sometimes been used, incorrectly, to label other banded lapidary materials, such as security calcite found in Mexico, Pakistan, and other stead, and often carved, polished and sold. This material is much softer than genuine onyx, and much more readily ready. The majority of carved local sold as “onyx” today are this carbonate material.
